How I got addicted to Friday the 13th: The Game

In October 2018 Friday the 13th: The Game was a monthly game on Playstation Plus, and I instantly got addicted to it. Here are my first impressions about the game back then.

I got totally hooked on PS Plus' October's game of the month Friday the 13th: The Game, which is based on the movie series of the same name. The game is being played online with other people so that one player is the killer Jason and others are his victims who try to escape.

At first I was only pissed at the game because 90% of the time I was just forced to stare at the starting screen, because there were no sessions to be found. Then I learned that if you can't find a session in two minutes, stop the search and try again.

For a month I didn't do much else than play Friday the 13th. And when I didn't play it I watched its streams. Right after the start I stopped playing as Jason. First of all I'm a terrible Jason. And second of all it's really stressful to play as Jason. In my last Jason match I felt like being bullied back in school when the counselors gangbanged me. Thanks, I have had enough. Playing as the victim is more suitable for me. I don't like the game's excessive violence and its totally unnecessary gore, there are like dozens of terrible ways to kill. But I guess that's how it is in the Friday the 13th movies. I have only seen one of the F13 movies, at Finnish class at school when I was 14. I totally don't remember why it was being watched there.

There are three different ways to survive in the game. First of all the match lasts for 20 minutes, if Jason won't be able to kill you in that time you have "won". You can also try to call the cops, but that requires many things. At first you have to find the phone box fuse, then the cabin which has the phone box. It takes 5 minutes for the police to arrive and then you have to get to them alive. The third way to escape is by car or by boat, but they require parts and gas, and the car also needs keys.

Just hanging around in a bathroom with my two (still surviving) friends. At one point I had to play as Buggzy so I could remove Jason's mask for a trophy. But other than that my first main counselor was AJ at first, then Adam and finally Vanessa. By the way here's a game I will definitely never get the platinum trophy, that is for sure. I'm not interested to play as Jason for a thousand matches. Nor to kill a lot of the other players. (how wrong I was)

This fun lasted for a month but finally my health couldn't take it anymore. First my neck got so painful that for a few nights I couldn't even sleep without a painkiller. Then the pain spread to my should which had already earlier had symptoms. But luckily (?) my PS plus run out. I'm not gonna renew it right now because maybe I should do something else with my life than just play this game? Some people dare to say that game trophies are not real life achievements. And in this game those trophies take so much work and time.

My early gameplay video happens to have all four ways to survive: boat, police, time, car.

Ps. Jason, I’m a counselor. You can trust me. South Park's Halloween-episode in 2018 had a fun F13-reference.

Friday the 13th the game: Tips and tricks

I get commissions for purchases made through the links in this post, at no cost to you.

I watch a lot of streams of Friday the 13th: The game, and it's most painful to watch if a player has been playing this game for years, and doesn't know even the most simple survival methods of the game.

So I absolutely have to write a guide about seemingly little known tips about the game.

Tips as counselors

See my previous, elementary tips for counselors here.

Stamina is a counselor's most important asset. And what affects it, besides the stat itself? Fear. How do you reduce fear?

If you keep your flashlight on it makes you regain stamina faster, which is essential for survival. Therefore I always keep my flashlight on. It's the first thing I do when the match starts, put the flashlight on. I do turn the flashlight off on some occasions. Like for example when juking Jason inside a cabin. But most of the time the flashlight stays on.

But doesn't using the flashlight make Jason see you easier?

Yes. But if you know anything about Jason's sense mechanic you realize that you are gonna light up like a christmas tree on Jason's screen anyway. Crouching in the bushes doesn't work in this game. You are not hidden when Jason uses sense!

Another tip how to regain stamina faster: hiding spots. Going into a hiding spot makes you get your stamina back faster.

If you have a pocket knife you can use it to re-start the car. When Jason grabs you out of the car, be ready. Get straight back in the car and start it. Whether you have enough time to start the car during Jason's pocket knife animation, depends on the counselor's luck stat. Counselors like Tommy and Chad with 10/10 luck are the best for this. Counselors with 1/10 luck like AJ and Shelly do NOT have enough time for this trick, unless Jason player messes up. Even with 2/10 luck it's risky. And for this to work, you as a counselors can't mess up, you have to be as fast as possible. If there's any delay on your part, Jason is gonna grab you again.

When Jason is in rage, your best chances of starting the car are pocket knives and shotguns (I personally hate when shotguns are "wasted" early on in the match, but that's a whole another topic). When Jason is stunned to the ground, there is enough time to start the car. When Jason is stunned standing up, there is not enough time.

Did you know?

There can be a health spray in the bathrooms of cabins. Also the boat propeller can spawn in a bathroom!

There are always 3 pocket knives in every match/map. Two in cabin drawers, and one outside, for example on a campsite. Do not overlook the campsites, they can have important loot.

Common mistakes

Crouching does NOT make your stamina regain faster.

If you commit suicide you can't become Tommy. So if you are waiting for that, you are just wasting your time.

If you play as a random counselor your Tommy will be perkless.

Can you still get the trophies in Friday the 13th game?

No, you can't. Not the cumulative trophies which take more than one match to achieve. You can only get the trophies which you can earn in a single match.

Why am I level 150 in Friday the 13th?

I get commissions for purchases made through the links in this post, at no cost to you.

Friday the 13th: The game infamously suffered from hackers who could delete any player's perks and cp. So to fix this and to reduce costs there was last update to the game, which gave all the players level 150 and the best perks.

Friday the 13th: The Game - Database Server Update

30 Legendary Perks

  • Awarded to All
  • Most Popular Perks
  • No Negative Effects
  • All Best Roll Possible

All Players Level 150

All Kills Unlocked

All Challenge Skulls Unlocked

No XP/CP Earned

No Matchmaking Functionality Lost

This update also broke the trophies. You can't get any cumulative trophies anymore. You can only get the trophies you can earn in a single match. There isn't gonna be a fix to this. Therefore the platinum for F13 is unobtainable.

I was lucky enough to get the platinum just before this update... They were always coming up with new ways to break the game.
