Friday the 13th to be removed from PS Plus Extra

No more newbies on Playstation in Friday the 13th: The Game?

This is the news I feared for.

F13 will be removed from Playstation Plus Extra on Tuesday December 19th, 2023.

Will there be enough players in the future? Will the lobbies still be full on Playstation?

If you still want to play F13 you need to buy it and fast. After December 31st, 2023 the game will be removed from digital and physical storefronts. You can still play it after that if you own the game.

My favorite game - Friday the 13th: The Game

Here's an essay I wrote for a school assignment [INTRODUCTION TO VIDEO GAMES CREATION, 35 ECTS, free of charge]. For some reason no one else had chosen F13 as their favorite game. Most popular favorite game? GTA 5.

My favorite game

Friday the 13th: The Game

Friday the 13th: The Game is an asymmetrical multiplayer game based on a horror movie series of the same name. In the movies a killer named Jason murders summer camp counselors. But to enjoy the game you don’t have to be a fan of the movies. I, for one, haven’t seen the movies, but fell in love with the game nonetheless.

In the game you play as either the killer Jason or as one of the victim counselors. One of the players is randomly chosen to play as Jason. But you don’t have to play as the killer if you don’t want to. Then you can set your preference to counselor only.

Each match can have a maximum of 8 players, one as Jason and the others as victims. Jason is all alone against all the other players, but to balance that he has some supernatural powers. He can teleport himself to any part of the map, or he can travel fast through air and appear suddenly right next to a clueless victim.

You have 14 different victims/counselors to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The counselors have 7 statistics, with a score from 1 to 10. Usually stamina is considered to be the most important ability in the game, making it easiest to survive with a counselor who has high stamina. Stamina control is essential for survival in F13. Whereas the repair statistic determines how difficult the repair mini-games are.

There are many ways to survive in Friday the 13th: The Game. Each multiplayer match lasts a maximum of 20 minutes. If you are still alive after that time you have won. But that can be difficult even for the most skillful players.

You can try to escape the camp by three different ways: car, boat or police. To be able to escape in the car you need to find gas, battery and car keys. For the boat escape you need gas and propeller, which is arguably the most difficult item to find in the game. And if Jason catches you in the water it’s very easily game over. For the police escape you need to find the phone fuse, then find the cabin which has the phone box, repair it and call the police. It usually takes 5 minutes for the police to arrive, and even after that you’ll have to run to the exit they have come. Most maps have two possible exits, but one has three.

There’s also a third way to survive the match. Jason himself can be killed, but it has some special requirements and this always needs at least two counselors to co-operate. No one can kill Jason alone.

Is the game difficult? It depends on the skill level of the players. If the player who plays as Jason is really good even the best players might not survive. Also as a counselor you might find yourself in an impossible situation if all the other players who play as victims don’t know what they are doing. And for a total newbie this game can have a really steep learning curve.

Friday the 13th: The Game is notorious for at least two reasons.

The game became collateral damage to a lawsuit concerning the Friday movies. Because of a lawsuit about the first movie’s copyrights the game was ordered not to make any new DLCs or updates to the game. Many say that this essentially killed the game, and made it to lose to the likes of Dead by Daylight and other similar games.

During its full run Friday the 13th: The Game has been known for numerous bugs and glitches, even game breaking ones. The community dreaded new patches to the game, because whenever the devs tried to fix some bugs they usually ended up breaking something new in the game. Many of the bugs can be fun to watch, but if it’s happening to you it might not be so funny.

What is the worst part about Friday the 13th: The Game? Like with all the other online multiplayer games it’s the other players. The victims can be mean to each other, help Jason to kill the other counselors or the counselors can even kill each others. In the early days counselors could kill each others directly with weapons, but this friendly fire was quickly removed. Now you can still kill other counselors by running them over by a car.

There are many asymmetrical multiplayer horror games to choose from. What makes Friday the 13th: The Game so much better than all the others? Many asymmetrical games are 1 vs 4, whereas Friday is 1 vs 7 (8), essentially making it easier for the victims to escape by sheer numbers alone. In Friday you have many different ways to escape or survive, unlike in many other similar games. And in F13 you can fight against the killer, and even kill him. So the best part is the variety in gameplay compared to its competitors. Each match is different, you never know what to expect. And despite its extremely violent content F13 also offers lots of funny moments to its players, whether its intentional or unintentional. In other similar games you can’t play as a character who is wearing only a speedo and dance to the killer while he’s trying to catch you.

If you still want to experience the awesomeness of the best game ever, Friday the 13th: The Game, you are in a hurry. At the end of the year 2023 the game will be removed from both digital and physical storefronts, due to license expiring. Even after that you will still be able to play the game if you own it, at least until the end of the year 2024. But after that the tale of Friday the 13th: The Game will probably be over for good.

After being addicted to Friday the 13th: The Game for over 5 years, the idea of never being able to play my all time favorite game again makes me very sad and even horrified. I can only hope that some day in the future there will be a game which will be able to continue Friday’s glorious legacy.
